Lake Nyabikere

Along Fortportal-Kamwenge road near Kibale National Park administration offices, you hapen to cross this marvelous crater lake.
It derives its name from the many frogs and tods which start singing in the evening until morning thus people nicknamed it “Mother of Frogs” Nyabikere.
We take you around this lake either by boat or natural trails as we enjoy birds and shrubs around the lakes and fishing (Tilapia fish) can be done. We have a chance of spoting a Hippo.
Lake Nyinabulitwa
This is found along Rweteera-Rwaihamba road and has an amazing view with luxurious lodges around it. It is woth stop over on the hike to Top of the world or drive to Queen Elizabeth National park.
Its name is connected to Tooro culture with mother of one of the best servant of the king was lost during its formation thus called after her (Mother of Bulitwa)

There are alot of activities and stories along this lake.
Lake Nyamirima
This is hidden deep in Nyamirima village with steep slopes, covered vegetation which overshadows the lake.
This made local believe that the lake is a dark lake thus the world Nyamirima.
Lake Nkuruba
This is a tranquil volcanic crater lake, known for its serene, forested setting, clear waters, and abundant wildlife, particularly monkeys (black & white colobus, red colobus) and diverse birds, offering activities like nature walks, birding, cultural experiences, and a gateway to larger safaris. It’s a non-profit ecotourism spot, popular for its picturesque views, peaceful atmosphere, and opportunities for hiking, camping, and connecting with local culture near Fort Portal

Lake Nyanswiga

This is hidden deep in Nyansiga Village and is associated with a local herd delicacy known as Enswiga (African Nightshade or Black Nightshade)
These grow on the slopes of this crater and its where it drives its name.
Lake Nyeirya
Known for being the galaton lake as told by the locals it drives its name from mass numbers of people drowning.

This is because the slopes are very steep and at sometimes it boils killings its inhabitants like fish. Nyeirya meaning eating yourself is woth visiting to get the clear view of the banana plantations in the calderas sorounding.
Lake Nyinambuaga

Associated with Tooro Kingdom as a seat for the court of tooro during 18th Century, it derives its name from the rocky hill on Ndali road.

It is the special as it is dipicted on 20,000 Shilling note and has many stories and myths associated.
Lake Kifuruka

Always known as twin lakes with lake Nyinambuga the road passes in between them.
It is believed that at one time it shifted but later came back thus being call Kifuruka (The migrant). It is shallow that’s why most fishermen like it and the water is muddy.

Lake Lyantonde
This gem located near Lake Kifuruka derives its name from the past where people used to offer offering s for the creator (God). The word signifies “place of the river” or sometimes “creation”

It used to be inhabited by the catle keepers but when their catle perished during the formation of this crater lake they shifted to the present district of Lyantonde.

Lake Lukwanzi
Lake Rukwanzi is a picturesque, small crater lake situated within the Kasenda crater field in Western Uganda, near Kibale National Park. Formed by ancient volcanic activity, it is characterized by steep, forested, and hilly surroundings, offering scenic views and a tranquil environment.
Lake Mwamba
Lake Mwamba is a scenic, quiet volcanic crater lake located in the Kabarole district near Fort Portal Tourism City.

Situated at approximately 1,300 ft above sea level in the foothills of the Rwenzori Mountains, it offers a peaceful getaway, with activities including canoe paddling, bird watching, community visits, and,views of the Rwenzori ranges
Lake Kasenda

During the kingdom era, people who could disobey the king could be banished to this area because it was forested and accommodated dangerous animals and insects. It was very hard to survive.
This led to the area being known as banishemt grounds (Kusenda in Rutooro). The migration of Bakiga people from south western Uganda led to the development of the area because they were fearless, energetic and thry cleared this place for settlement.
The Lake is central in the area for providing food and water for community use

Lake Rwankyenzi
Named after many wild finger millet grass (Eleusine coracana) across the lake.

It is well known for being near one of the oldest scull of the early man in Uganda was found.
Ndikya and Rwenzubu Twin Lakes
These crater lakes are located in Ndali-Kasenda crater field. They share same waters with a small river joining the two lakes.

From Rweteera we can access these lakes with boda bodas or drive.
Lake Mwitampungu
The name is linked to “a place that kills eagles,” the local lore about a volcanic pipe that supposedly affects birds in flight.

Nzigamire Crater
The lake is situated near Rwenzubu and Ndikya crater lakes.
The name originates from the Kinyarwanda word which means Saving.

It is a salty lake therefore its waters not good for home use.
Iragiza Water Ringed Swamps
These are near Lake Rwankyezi and is well known for inhabiting the skeleton of the early man.
It is a good space for birding and nature walk.

Lake Kifungilo
Less known, this crater Lake is located deep in Bunyangabu district.

Lake Kanyamukale
This is also in Bunyangabu district Rwimi towncouncil.
Bunyangabu and neighboring Kabarole districts are famous for hosting over 50 crater lakes, created by volcanic activity thousands of years ago, which now provide scenic,, tranquil environments for tourism.

Lake Ntanda
Also found in Bunyangabu district Kiyombya sub county. This natural wonder give a stunning view.
Formed thousands of years ago, it is part of a larger cluster of crater lakes in the region known for its lush, green surroundings and serves as a significant, picturesque natural feature.

Lake Ntambi
Located in Rwimi Town Council, Bunyangabu District, often accessed during tours of the Kibale Forest National Park area.
Popular for nature walks, bird watching (including species like the Great Blue Turaco), and cultural tours exploring the surrounding
Serves as a significant natural landmark, providing a habitat for diverse flora and fauna, and holds cultural importance for the local communitie villages.
Mubiro Crater Lake
Like others in the area, it was created by volcanic activity that left large, water-filled basins rather than cone-shaped mountains.
The area is popular for swimming (oftenbilharzia-free), canoeing, birdwatching, and community walks to explore the local culture and landscapes

Lake Mwegenyi
It is situated along the Buhesi road in the Bunyaruguru/Ndali-Kasenda crater region, often visited for its stunning landscapes

Located 2km further from Lake Lyantonde along the Buhesi road in the Kabata village area
Often visited alongside the numerous other crater lakes in the region, offering opportunities for hiking, nature walks, and birdwatching.
Murigamire Crater lake
Lake Murigamire is a scenic, small volcanic crater lake situated in the Kabalore district near the town of Fort Portal and Kibale Forest National Park.
